A Little About Myself.
I have lived in Lawrence for seventeen years. It is my home, and the people who live here, my family. I have always felt a sense of duty to contribute positively to my community. Throughout my time in Lawrence, I've served on several boards, and I've done my best to serve as I've raised my family and developed my career. I want to serve on the city commission because I believe that service on the city commission aligns best with my experience, strengths, and passions in a way that would benefit our community and contribute positively to our city's future.
LeadershipI have committed my personal and professional life to developing my leadership skills and working toward public service. This includes focusing on a macro-level education, taking leadership roles within institutions, including staff senate at KU, and putting in the extra effort and time necessary to serve on the executive committee of the boards on which I serve and have served.
Leaders are those who look to the future and see what could be. They apply that vision to each aspect of the work they do, including developing emerging leaders as mentors, developing policy and protocol that moves organizations forward, and using transparency and efficiency to move toward that vision. Leaders serve those they represent, not the other way around. Any leader can be a supervisor, but not all supervisors are leaders. Supervising is ensuring that what needs to be done today gets done. Any leader must be able to balance the day-to-day needs of a constituency with the broader needs of the community over time. Leadership is the commitment that I offer to you as city commissioner. |
VisionOur city is growing. We cannot deny that Lawrence is an attractive place to live for many reasons. The city can either be a rudder guiding this growth, or we can be caught in its wake.
We developed the Horizon 2020 plan with the county many years ago. This plan has been updated and expanded throughout the years. Recently, the city has again engaged in a long-term planning process. I believe that I am uniquely qualified to participate in this process. Visioning processes require not only looking at what is, but looking at what will be and what could be. This means considering many facets, including systems, the environment, technology, and our current political climate and community desires as well as projecting those things out into the future. I have considerable experience working with and among systems, including the criminal justice system, the court system, state government, the social welfare system, the university administrative system, and numerous non-profit and cooperative boards representing many perspectives. I have also facilitated a visioning process that thoroughly vetted and reviewed several options for growth before identifying a specific target that aligned with the goals of the organization as well as revisioning the ends and mission that would guide that process. As a former small business owner and former board president of the Merc Co-op, I have considerable business experience that I believe would be useful to this process and give me insight into the needs of small business owners and our residents. |
How Can You Help?
I’m glad you asked!
The most important support is your vote at both the August 1st primary and again in the November election!
Secondly, please consider donating to my campaign. Although my campaign has been heavily grassroots, your contribution is vital. You'll find the contribution link at the top of this page.
Not everyone can contribute financially to a campaign. I completely understand. There are other that you can contribute! I would be grateful to receive any of the following from supporters:
- sponsor a coffee or brunch in your home with individuals you think might be interested in donating or talking about issues important to them
- put up a yard sign
- address envelopes
- distribute campaign literature door-to-door
- invite me to speak to your group or organization
- and anything else that might be helpful!
Please contact me through the Contact page on this site or by email. I look forward to hearing from you!
